Concept Explanation

Haryana and Gurjar - Pratihara Period

  • From an inscription obtained from a place called Jodhaka in Sirsa district of Haryana, it s known that the Pratiharas had occupied Haryana.
  • Pratihara ruler Vatsaraja had made Tomar Sardar named Galla as the special administrator here, but Varsaraja did not remain in power for long.
  • Due to the increasing influence of Rashtrakuta rulers, he was expelled from power.
  • After the expulsion of Vatsaraja, the Tomar rulers had an opportunity to increase their power, but Tomar could not succeed in establishing his power for long as the Pala Dynasty ruler Dharmapala defeated and subjugated him.
  • After some time, Haryana and Kannauj were restored under the son of Vatsaraja. Nagabhatta. After the death of Nagabhatta in 833 AD, his son Rambhadra became the ruler.
  • Rambhadra proved to be an inept (incapable) ruler. During his short tenure (833-836 AD), a state of chaos arose, but Rambhadras son Mihirbhoja proved to be a worthy ruler.
  • Mihirbhoja established a strong Pratihara Empire by his ability and intelligence. During the reign of Mihirbhoja, the Pratihara Empire started on the path of progress and Pehowa was established as a trading center. Mihirbhoja made Kannauj his capital.
